Lightening dark lips is a common skin concern of many people, and it can be gradually lightened with the right skincare, home remedies and lifestyle changes. The skin of the lips is very delicate, so using harsh products or chemicals on it can be harmful. There can be many reasons for dark lips – like excessive sun exposure, dehydration, caffeine and smoking, frequent application of lipstick, allergy, hormonal imbalance or genetic reasons. Therefore, before starting a lip care routine, it is important that you understand its reasons and improve them gradually. By adopting the right methods, the natural pink tone of the lips starts coming back in a few weeks and their texture also becomes soft.
The first step is exfoliation. Dead skin accumulated on the lips makes them look dull and dark, hence it is important to clean the lips with a light scrub 2-3 times a week. You can make a mild scrub of sugar and honey at home, or you can also use gentle lip scrubs available in the market. This removes dead cells and increases blood circulation in the lips, which brings natural pinkness. But keep in mind that the scrub should not be too rough nor rub it too much, otherwise the skin may get cut or irritated.
After this comes deep moisturizing. Dark lips often look worse due to dehydration, so it is important to apply lip balm 2–3 times daily. Choose balms that contain nourishing ingredients like shea butter, cocoa butter, vitamin E, coconut oil or almond oil. Applying lip balm in a thick layer before sleeping at night repairs the lips and makes them feel soft and plump by morning.
Home remedies are also very beneficial in lip lightening. The citric acid present in lemon acts as a lightening agent, so you can apply a little lemon juice at night, but avoid it if you have sensitive skin. Applying beetroot juice or its paste on the lips gives a natural pink tint. Apart from this, paste of aloe vera gel, honey, turmeric and a little milk also helps in lightening the lips and removing tan. Potato juice is also known to reduce pigmentation, which can be applied once a day.
Also, sun protection is a very important part of lip lightening. Just like your skin can get tanned by the sun, lips also get tanned. Therefore, before going out, apply lip balm with SPF. Reducing or stopping smoking, controlling the amount of caffeine and drinking more water also makes lips naturally healthy. If the darkness is very severe and home remedies are not making any difference, then lip pigmentation treatments like chemical peels or laser therapy can also be done by consulting a dermatologist. With proper care, moisturization and sun protection, your lips gradually become light and pink, and their health and softness also comes back.
