Raigarh. The troubles of farmers in the forest areas of the district are not showing any signs of decreasing. Along with elephants, now herds of wild pigs are wreaking havoc on the paddy crops. As soon as night falls, wild pigs enter the fields and cause huge damage to the crops, which is affecting both the hard work and financial condition of the farmers.
Adopted indigenous measures for crop protection
The situation is most serious in Badgaon, located at some distance from Raigarh city. Here farmers are resorting to traditional measures to save their crops. As soon as the evening falls, farmers light the bulbs planted in the fields, seeing whose light the wild pigs shy away from coming near the fields. Apart from this, farmers are also keeping fireplaces lit on the side of the fields at night, so that wild pigs stay away from the bright light and smoke.
Farmers’ demand from the government
Farmers say that they do not get any compensation for the damage to crops caused by wild pigs, even though the loss is so much. The hard work of the entire season goes waste. Farmers have demanded from the administration to control wild pigs and compensate for the loss of crops.
