A rare species of squirrel has been rescued from the residential area of Valmiki Nagar range of Valmiki Tiger Reserve. Sumit Kumar, a guard posted on the roadside near E-Type Colony of the Water Resources Department, saw this. On receiving the information, the forest department team reached the spot and took safe custody of the squirrel and took action to release it in the forest.
‘Valmiki Tiger Reserve’ situated in West Champaran district of Bihar is not only called the bastion of biodiversity. Every day, information about the residence of some rare creature comes to light from this dense forest spread over about 900 square kilometers.
Sometimes an 18 feet long King Cobra, sometimes the world’s largest-sized Atlas Moth. The surprising thing is that the presence of flying squirrel has also been recorded here only yesterday.
According to the information received, this rare species of squirrel has been rescued from the residential area of Valmiki Nagar Range under Forest Division 02 of Valmiki Tiger Reserve.

Actually, this squirrel was seen on the roadside near the IB office located in E-Type Colony of the Water Resources Department. The guard posted there, Sumit Kumar, saw it for the first time and immediately informed the Forest Department.
After receiving the information, the forest department team reached the spot and safely captured the squirrel. According to experts, this special species of squirrel glides in the air with the help of a membrane of skin located between its front and hind legs.
In common language it is called flying squirrel. It is a rodent, which is larger in size than normal squirrels and is active at night. If needed, it can glide up to 60 meters in the air.
The thing to note is that about 44 species of squirrels are found across the world, out of which 12 species have also been seen in different forests of India.
