Cyclone Ditwah; PM Modi: Cyclone Ditvah has caused huge devastation in Sri Lanka, where more than 330 people have died and thousands have been rendered homeless. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and expressed his condolences and assured to provide all possible help under Operation Sagar Bandhu. Indian relief material and rescue teams have reached the spot.
New Delhi: Cyclone Ditvaha has wreaked havoc in Sri Lanka. Strong winds, heavy rains and landslides together caused such devastation that there was an outcry in the entire country. According to the latest figures, more than 330 people have lost their lives and lakhs of people have been forced to move to safe places to save their lives. Relief and rescue teams are working continuously, but many villages are still difficult to reach. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on phone and expressed his deep condolences.
PM Modi said that India is standing shoulder to shoulder with Sri Lanka in this difficult time and all possible help is being sent under Operation Sagar Bandhu. Relief materials, rescue teams and necessary equipment have been dispatched immediately so that the people in distress can get assistance as soon as possible.
Cyclone Ditvah caused huge devastation across the country
On Friday, Cyclone Ditvaha spread across Sri Lanka. This created a situation of landslides, heavy rains and sudden floods. According to the Disaster Management Center of Sri Lanka-
- There were 330+ deaths.
- 23 people still missing.
- 43,991 people were shifted to schools and public shelters.
- Contact with many villages was lost.
- Houses, roads and bridges were washed away.
- Many families were left stranded on rooftops.
The situation remains most serious in the eastern and central areas of the country. The Meteorological Department has warned that the rain may increase further in the next few hours.
PM Modi’s concern and India’s immediate help
During his conversation with the Sri Lankan President, PM Modi said that India will continue to provide all possible assistance to Sri Lanka under its Neighbor First Policy and Vision Ocean. He said that India has immediately sent relief material. Special rescue teams (HADR teams) were deployed. Additional help is also on the way through Operation Sagar Bandhu. Cooperation will continue at every level in the coming days also
President Dissanayake appreciated India’s swift response and said that India’s role is very important in this hour of crisis.
