Clove is not only a flavor enhancing spice in the kitchen, but is also very useful due to its medicinal properties. Cloves are used for everything from cold and cough to toothache and digestion. Seeing its increasing prices in the market, now people are getting attracted towards growing it at home. The good thing is that cloves can be easily grown in pots also.
Environmentalist Dr. Kaushal Kishore Jaiswal told Local18 that the clove plant can be grown through a pot on the terrace, balcony or courtyard of the house. It does not require any big farm or special resources. With the right knowledge and a little patience, even common people can grow a clove plant at home.
He further said that two methods can be adopted to grow cloves. First, clove seeds should be soaked in water for a few hours and sown. Second, take fresh clove stalk from the market and plant it. Keep in mind that the stalk should be fresh and healthy, only then the chances of germination are greater.

He further said that well drained soil is necessary for the clove plant. For this, mix two parts of normal soil, one part sand and one part compost well. This mixture strengthens the roots of the plant and prevents water logging.
Plant the seeds or stalks by pressing them lightly into the soil and sprinkle some water on top. Do not plant too deeply. Keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid excessive watering, as this can cause root rot.
Further said that keep the clove plant in a place with bright but indirect sunlight. Its leaves can get scorched if kept in strong sunlight. The balcony of the house or any place where there is light sunlight is considered suitable for cloves.
He said that the clove plant grows slowly. Within a few months, new leaves and branches start appearing in it. Patience is most important in the cultivation of this plant.
The clove plant gets the ability to flower and produce cloves in 3 to 4 years. This plant likes warm and moist environment. Once the plant is ready, fresh cloves can be obtained at home, so that there will be no need to buy cloves from the market at expensive prices.
