US Drone News: FBI has started the process of purchasing fiber optic and advanced radio-controlled drones. These drones do not jam and are very useful in buildings, tunnels and complex operations. Ukraine is using fiber optic drones in the war. These have proved to be very effective.
The same technology which made major electronic jammers fail in the Ukraine war has now become the new choice of America’s investigative agency FBI. We are talking about those special drones, which are controlled not by radio signals but by long and very thin fiber optic cables. These cannot be jammed under any circumstances. This is the reason why these drones are now rapidly gaining place in America’s internal security and high-risk operations. Both Russia and Ukraine are using such drones. There are many places in the battlefield which are full of fiber optic cables.
According to the report of The War Zone, the FBI has issued an official RFI (Request for Information), in which information has been sought from vendors manufacturing such drones. The FBI clearly wrote that the agency ‘investigates a variety of federal crimes’ and drones are now becoming its eyes and ears in the field. Radio-based drones are vulnerable in buildings, tunnels or inside structures because of signal interference. But fiber optic drones have a hard-wired channel between the controller and the drone, which is not affected by any radio jammer. This is the reason why this technique is now being liked by the American FBI.
Fiber optic cables spread across the plains of Ukraine.
What are the problems with this drone?
However, it also has disadvantages. These drones are less agile, the cable can get tangled or cut and the drone has to carry a heavy cable spool. Despite this, indoor operations, tunnels, complex buildings and the ability to work without ‘line of sight’ make it special. The FBI wants to buy not only fiber drones, but also new radio-controlled drones. These should have the facility of flight of at least 30 minutes, protection from dust and water, backpack portability and live video monitoring. The price has also been set at less than $12,000.
