What to Take for Cold and Flu: The problem of cold and cough troubles the most in winter. Sneezing, runny nose and sore throat are symptoms of common cold. Many times, due to this, people start getting headache and also get fever. People face this problem due to changing weather, cold air, weak immunity or viral infection. Cold and cough are not dangerous, but people get very worried due to it. In such a situation, the most common question of people is which medicine should be taken for cold and cough? In this regard, find out from the doctor the safest medicine, which can give immediate relief.
Dr. Sonia Rawat, Director of Preventive Health and Wellness Department, Sir Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi told StuffUnknown. That cold and cough are treated on the basis of symptoms. If there is fever, headache or body ache along with cold, then people are advised to take paracetamol. It provides relief from both pain and fever. If someone is sneezing a lot, has a running nose or has allergy-like symptoms, then anti-allergic medicine is given in this condition. If there is nasal congestion, heaviness or difficulty in breathing, then de-congestant tablets or nasal drops are given.
Do not take antibiotics at all
Doctor Sonia Rawat said that first of all it is important to understand that the main cause of common cold is virus, hence antibiotics are not given. Antibiotics provide relief from bacterial infections and are of no use in viral infections. Taking antibiotics unnecessarily can lead to antibiotic resistance. Therefore, it is not right to take these medicines in case of cold and cough. If someone has a bacterial infection, then the doctor gives him antibiotics.
Home remedies also provide relief
According to the doctor, instead of taking medicines, some home remedies can also be adopted in case of cold and cough. Taking steam, drinking hot water, adding salt to water, gargling lightly and taking hot fluids are considered beneficial. Most viral colds heal on their own in 3 to 5 days. If the fever continues to increase, there is difficulty in breathing, chest pain or cold persists for more than 10 days, then consult a doctor and get checked. After the test report, the doctor will give the right treatment.
