When did the Urdu translation happen?
In the 1980s, when the Shah Bano case was at its peak and the group of fundamentalists were giving priority to religion over Hindu-Muslim unity, there was a controversy regarding this song. It was said that this is un-Islamic. Some Ulemas opposed this song. When the Shah-Bano case was going on in the Supreme Court, an axis of communal forces was also sowing the seeds of hatred between Hindus and Muslims in the country. At the same time, Arif Mohammad Khan, who was a minister in the Congress government, resigned from the post of minister in protest against the government’s decision on Shah Bano and made a strong attack on the Ulemas by translating the song Vande Mataram into Urdu. Arif Mohammad Khan tried to strengthen the Ganga-Jamuni culture by presenting it in Urdu. The story behind translating the song
While talking to a TV channel, Arif Mohammad Khan once said that the idea of translating it into Urdu came to my mind. I just sat down to translate it one night. Searched many Sanskrit dictionaries for difficult words. When I started translating, I saw that it was becoming like a poem. Then I tried to make it rhythmic. Then he stayed awake the whole night and transformed it into a poem. After this in the morning I sent someone to Lucknow to get opinion on this translation. I wanted to know whether anyone’s religion would be hurt by its words. I told that person not to tell who had sent it. Arif Mohammad Khan told that after some time he got a call and said that Arif Bhai, everyone read it and everyone told that there is nothing written in this song which can hurt anyone’s sentiments. Then he told that this is the translation of Vande Mataram. Arif Mohammad Khan said that if you decide to object to Vande Mataram without reading it, there is no solution for it.
