An area of rain, sleet and snow moved across the UK overnight and into Wednesday morning, causing some icy patches and some areas to wake up to a dusting of snow.
The Met Office said “night ice could create particularly difficult travel conditions.” The agency warned that the winter weather makes driving conditions dangerous, adding that road closures are possible, which could leave some vehicles and passengers stranded.
Darren Clark, weather resistance advisor for National Highways, which looks after England’s main roads, has urged all drivers to carry out “quick checks”, such as checking lights and tyres, to “not get caught out”.
He added that there are more than 530 spreaders available to be called “when the snow comes or conditions demand it.”
National Highways is working closely with the Met Office, which has asked all drivers to ensure their vehicles are stocked with essential items, such as food, clothing and a flashlight, in case of delays.
Motorists traveling in both directions along the A628 Woodhead Pass between Hollingworth and Flouch in Derbyshire can expect delays due to snow, National Highways said.
Calmac ferries in Scotland have warned that some services have been cancelled, while others “may be disrupted or canceled at short notice” due to “adverse weather”.
Delays and cancellations of bus and train service are also possible.
Travelers are advised to plan their route, check for delays, closures or cancellations, and allow plenty of time to prepare and travel.
