Becoming parents is the dream of every couple in the world. Many people try for this for years, while some people fulfill this dream with the help of science. But sometimes such a decision also becomes a cause of controversy in the eyes of people. A similar case has come to light of a same-sex couple from Taiwan, who welcomed four children together through surrogacy in Mexico, but after this tremendous reactions and criticism started on social media.
Actually, among this gay couple living in Taiwan, one is space designer Liu and the other is her husband Lin. Both were going to get married in the year 2022. Taiwan is the first country in Asia to legalize gay marriage in 2019. According to South China Morning Post, on November 11, the couple shared a video and gave the good news that they have become the father of not one, but four children, and they will document the entire journey of their children, i.e. make it like a film.
Where and how were the children born?
The couple explored surrogacy in several countries—such as Ukraine, Colombia, and elsewhere—to have a child, but ultimately chose Mexico. Mexico does not have nationwide laws for surrogacy, but some states, such as Tabasco and Sinaloa, have a clear and established legal framework for surrogacy. The most interesting thing is that all four children were born from the same egg donor and two different surrogate mothers. Both the surrogate women gave birth to twins. One child each was conceived from the sperm of both fathers Liu and Lin, which means each father has one child biologically. The couple says that during the entire surrogacy process, the health and safety of the surrogate mothers was given top priority. They were provided complete medical facilities, regular check-ups and necessary insurance, so that the entire process could be completed in a safe and respectable manner.
Criticism on social media – “Children have been bought!”
Although some people congratulated the couple, many people also expressed their opposition. One user said – “They are buying children… they are selfish…” Another said – “The surrogate suffered the pain of pregnancy, not these people… it is wrong to give birth to so many children.” The third wrote, “These people are inexperienced, do not use children for content.” Giving advice to the couple, another user wrote – “Do not feed milk to sleeping children, it can cause suffocation.”
What did the couple say about the criticism?
According to SCMP, the couple responded to people’s criticism by saying, “The entire process was legal and safe. The health of the female surrogate was taken full care of, she was given all kinds of security, medical facilities and insurance. Mexico’s surrogacy system is considered the most organized at the international level and a team of lawyers has monitored the entire process.” According to reports, the cost of surrogacy in Mexico usually ranges from 65,000 to 70,000 US dollars. However, surrogacy is currently illegal in Taiwan, so there may be difficulties in identification and documentation for children born abroad.
