New Delhi. US President Donald Trump made a big announcement on Sunday and said that he is soon going to give a ‘tariff dividend’ of 2000 dollars to most of the American citizens. This amount will be sent directly to people’s accounts and will be funded entirely from the revenue raised from tariffs (import duties). Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social that America is ‘making trillions of dollars from tariffs’ and this step would be the first step towards reducing the country’s $37 trillion debt. However, it has not been made clear yet which income group will get this amount and when the payment will start.
Legal challenge on Trump’s tariff policy in Supreme Court
This announcement comes at a time when Trump’s tariff policies are under legal scrutiny in the US Supreme Court. The court is deciding whether Trump has misused his powers under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Lower courts have already ruled many tariffs exceed the president’s authority. Trump claimed that ‘America is the richest and most respected country in the world today.’ According to the Finance Ministry, tariff duty worth $195 billion has been collected in the financial year 2025, which is much higher than previous years.
