Symptoms Of Diabetic Ketosis: Diabetic ketosis is fast becoming a serious and life-threatening problem in children suffering from type-1 diabetes. According to doctors, carelessness should not be taken as soon as symptoms like stomach ache, vomiting, fast breathing, extreme weakness and sudden fainting appear. If timely treatment is not received, the child’s life may be in danger.
Kanpur : Nowadays, diabetic ketosis (diabetic ketoacidosis), a serious and fatal disease related to diabetes, is emerging rapidly in children. Doctors say that if its initial symptoms are not recognized in time, the child may even die. Its main signs are severe stomach pain, difficulty in breathing, sudden fainting and extreme weakness. In such a situation, even a little carelessness can prove costly. This disease was discussed in detail in the three-day conference of Society for Prevention and Awareness of Diabetes held in Kanpur.
Dr. PSN Menon, retired professor of AIIMS Delhi, said that this problem is being seen especially in children suffering from Type-1 diabetes. Dr. Menon explained in simple words that when there is a deficiency of insulin in the body, the body starts burning fat for energy. In this process, toxic elements called ketones start forming in the body. This condition is called diabetic ketosis. If timely treatment is not received, this condition can prove fatal. He told that this problem is very rare in type-2 diabetes, but the risk is higher in children having type-1 diabetes.
Do not ignore these symptoms at all
- persistent severe pain in the stomach
- frequent vomiting or nausea
- fast or heavy breathing
extreme fatigue and weakness
suddenly faint while walking
Delay in treatment can become fatal
Dr. Menon said that if there is a delay in understanding the child’s condition and starting treatment in an emergency, the situation can deteriorate rapidly and in many cases it can even lead to death. Therefore, regular sugar testing of children suffering from diabetes is very important. Now insulin pens are available in the market, which are easier to use than normal injections. Apart from this, research is also going on on insulin inhaler and insulin powder for children, which can make the treatment simpler in future. Nowadays, sugar can be easily checked at home with the help of glucometer.
Caution is the best protection
The most effective way to prevent diabetic ketosis is awareness, regular testing and timely treatment. Parents should constantly keep an eye on the health of their children and not ignore any abnormal symptoms. A right step taken on time can save the life of the child.
