New Delhi. Air pollution in the national capital Delhi and the entire National Capital Region (NCR) has once again reached dangerous levels. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Monday expressed deep concern over the increasing pollution in Delhi-NCR and clearly said that now there is a need to give such orders which can be strictly followed on the ground.
Matters related to air pollution of Delhi-NCR were raised in the Supreme Court. During the hearing, Amicus Curiae Aparajita told the court that unless clear and strict instructions are given by the court, the state governments do not follow them seriously. He said that practical and effective orders are necessary to deal with this problem.
Chief Justice (CJI) Surya Kant, commenting on the issue, said that the court is fully aware of the problem and will now pass orders which can be actually implemented. He said that there should be some instructions which can be followed even by force. The CJI also said that in urban metros like Delhi, there is a section whose lifestyle creates the problem of pollution, but the poor and daily wage laborers have to bear the brunt of it the most.
CJI Surya Kant said that this matter will be placed before a bench of three judges on Wednesday so that practical and concrete orders can be given on it. The Supreme Court also made it clear that on December 17, a detailed hearing of all the cases related to severe air pollution in Delhi-NCR will be held.
Earlier, during the last hearing, a bench of the Supreme Court had said that air pollution cannot be ignored considering it as a ‘normal’ issue that occurs only in the winter season. The court had said that regular hearings would be held at least twice a month to find a permanent solution to this serious problem.
Along with pollution, the weather has also increased the problems. On Monday, there was the densest fog of this season. Visibility at IGI airport dropped to just 50 metres, while visibility was recorded at zero in Safdarjung area. According to the Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature is likely to be around 10 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature is likely to be between 24 to 25 degrees.
