Sitamarhi district of Bihar was separated from Muzaffarpur and got the status of district on 11 December 1972. Today Sitamarhi has completed 54 years. Being the cultural land of Mithila and the birthplace of Mata Janaki, Sitamarhi is considered a very important district from historical and religious point of view. A new direction of development is visible here in these 5 decades.
The district has received many big gifts in 54 years. A historic project worth about Rs 1000 crore has been approved by the state government for the Janaki Janmabhoomi area, under which the development of this holy place is being done on the Ayodhya model. With this, Sitamarhi is going to get a new place as an international religious tourism centre.
Another big step has been taken in the district in the form of Sitapuram. It has been announced to set up a modern, tourism-based and cultural city on approximately 700 acres of land. This scheme will present the identity, art and traditions of Mithila at the global level and will give a new dimension to the local economy.

Sitamarhi district is also making remarkable progress in the field of health, the much awaited medical college of the district is almost ready and it is expected to be inaugurated next year. With its commencement, the district will get better medical facilities, specialist doctors and a big achievement in health services.
The long awaited Pari-Mehsaul Overbridge is also almost ready now. It is likely to start in two to three months. As soon as this overbridge becomes operational, the problem of jam in the city will end to a great extent and the traffic system will be organized and fast.
Over the years, Sitamarhi has witnessed rapid development in education, health, roads, water supply and cultural infrastructure. New schools-colleges, upgradation of hospitals, road widening and expansion of religious tourism routes have taken the district to a new level. The government and administration are continuously giving impetus to development.
Sitamarhi no longer has an identity limited only to Bihar, but is being known in the country and abroad for its faith, culture, religious importance and rapidly growing development works. The global importance of Janaki Janmabhoomi has increased and the image of the district is becoming stronger as an emerging religious-tourism centre.
