Surajpur News: A shameful incident exposing the government health system has come to light in Surajpur district of Chhattisgarh. On Sunday, a tribal pregnant woman remained writhing on the ground in labor pain at the Primary Health Center (PHC) of Lanjit village, because the doctor and nurse had locked themselves and disappeared. The family had to call a rented car. Then the woman delivered inside the car on the way. The incident has gone viral on social media, which has shocked the system.
The incident took place in Lanjit village, where Sukhlal Oraon took his pregnant wife to PHC on a bike. But, the hospital was locked. The family members called the doctors and nurses repeatedly, but no one picked up the phone. Meanwhile, the woman started having severe labor pain. She kept writhing on the ground outside the hospital for about an hour. The family members created a ruckus, but the staff did not return. Eventually, a rented car was called so that the woman could be taken to the district hospital. But on the way the pain became unbearable. The women of the village got the delivery done inside the car. A healthy baby was born, but the newborn and the mother were admitted to the hospital just two hours later.
Called a lot but…
The woman’s husband Sukhlal Oraon told, “I brought my wife, called the phone, but Kavano did not pick up. She started having pain. She kept writhing on the ground for half an hour. After that, she called for a rented car.”
Action will be taken against those responsible
District CMHO Dr. DK Paikra said, “This incident happened yesterday. The staff had gone somewhere. They were calling a car to take the woman to another hospital, but she had labor pain and delivered in the car itself. Action will be taken against those responsible.”
This hospital should have remained open 24 hours
Lanjit Primary Hospital, where this incident took place, should actually remain open 24 hours. Surajpur is a tribal area. The villages here are located far away in the mountains, due to which the state government has constructed this hospital so that delivery and other primary health facilities are available to the villagers. A doctor and nurses have been posted in the hospital in 24-hour shifts, but since it is a tribal area, there is no control over anyone here.
Medical staff sabotaging plans
Under the Janani Suraksha Yojana, the state government keeps complete data of pregnant women from the beginning to the end. According to the data of National Health Mission NFHS and Registrar General of India in tribal and other backward areas of Chhattisgarh, even now 25 percent of the deliveries are done at home, in which 27 percent of the newborn babies born die due to infection, prematurity and other diseases. In such a situation, the health related schemes of the government are being sabotaged by uncontrolled medical staff.
