There are preparations to amend the Shops and Establishment Act 2017 in Chhattisgarh. Women will be allowed to work in night shift with consent. The overtime limit is being increased to 144 hours in a quarter. Gumashta will now be issued in the form of trade license from the District Labor Office.
Chhattisgarh government has prepared to make important amendments in the Shops and Establishment Act 2017. Through this amendment, the rules related to women’s night shift, overtime and trade license (Gumashta) have been changed, so that the working environment can be made more flexible.
Under the amendment, women will be allowed to work in night shift. However, this will be completely based on the consent of the female employee. Till now women were allowed to work only till 10 pm, but once the new rule is implemented, they will be able to do night duty also.
After the recent approval of women’s night shift by the Uttar Pradesh government, rules on similar lines are likely to be implemented in Chhattisgarh also. According to the Labor Department, it will be mandatory to follow the provisions related to safety and consent.

Overtime rules have also been changed. Earlier, only a maximum of 125 hours of overtime could be made from an employee in three months, but after the amendment, up to 144 hours of overtime will be allowed in a quarter.
The rules for Gumashta i.e. shop registration have also been simplified. Earlier this was mandatory only for shops with more than 10 employees and now the same limit has been maintained but the process has been more streamlined.
Now Gumashta will be issued by the District Labor Office instead of the Labor Department and it will be recognized as a trade license. This will give legal identity to the shops and increase transparency in business operations.
