New Delhi. The Central Government is now seriously considering running pod taxis in Delhi. Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal gave this information at the 18th Urban Mobility India Conference and Exhibition organized in Gurugram on Friday. He said that the policy related to operation of pod taxis on busy roads of Delhi and construction of tall buildings within 800 meters of the metro route will be prepared within a month. As of now, pod taxis are not running anywhere in the country. It is running at Heathrow Airport in London, Britain. It is also being operated on a small scale in Masdar City of Saudi Arabia and West Virginia University of America. Pod taxi is also known as Personal Rapid Transit i.e. PRT. This system works as a small electric pod, which is completely computerized. No driver, no hassle of crowd, just sit and the pod takes you to the designated station seamlessly. Its specialty is that it does not land on the road, but runs on a lightly elevated track built about 5-6 meters above the ground. Pod taxi is not just a new technology but a new chapter in future urban travel. It is fast, quiet, eco-friendly and is emerging as a strong option to free cities from traffic jams. 2 to 6 people can travel in a pod taxi.
Where are pod taxis running now?
Talking about the world, the most successful example of pod taxi can be seen in Britain’s London Heathrow Airport. This system, which has been running since 2011, has been used by more than 50 lakh passengers so far. Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City started it as a pilot project in 2010 and has made it a core part of its sustainable city concept. America’s West Virginia University has also been running the PRT system since 1975 and today more than 36 lakh passengers travel in it every year.
Where in India are you planning to run pod taxis?
Apart from Delhi, there are plans to run pod taxis in Noida and Mumbai in India. The government is preparing to run it on about 14.6 km long route from Jewar International Airport in Noida to Pari Chowk and Film City. Mumbai is also showing momentum regarding pod taxi. There is a plan to run it in a very busy business area like Bandra-Kurla Complex. A plan has been made to provide modern transport facilities to 4 to 6 lakh people daily by building 38 stations on this route. However, this project is still on paper and work has not started on the ground.
