Leading financial technology platform PhonePe has launched a new security feature called ‘PhonePe Protect’. Its purpose is to protect PhonePe users from fraudulent transactions. This new feature warns against sending money to suspicious numbers.
When such an attempt is made, a ‘PhonePe Protect’ warning message appears. It also mentions the risk of transaction being rejected due to security reasons. This increases awareness among PhonePe users.
‘PhonePe Protect’ feature – ‘PhonePe Protect’ feature detects and blocks transactions from numbers identified as suspicious by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). This has been possible through the Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) tool of the Department of Telecommunications.
PhonePe’s system intelligence identifies these risks during payments. It provides alerts in the form of real-time notifications so that users can make better decisions.
PhonePe was the first platform to adopt the DoT’s FRI. Using this feature, it has rejected transactions from mobile numbers with high FRI. It also displayed a warning on the screen. In case of numbers with medium FRI, the app gives an active warning before allowing the transaction.
This strategic partnership was highlighted at the 2025 India Mobile Congress (IMC). PhonePe was honored for its efforts to combat cyber fraud using AI-based tools like FRI.
Anuj Bhansali, Head of Trust Safety, PhonePe, said, “We are committed to payment security with this new feature. ‘PhonePe Protect’ reflects our vision of creating an economy where security is essential in every transaction.” This is part of a larger effort to create a secure digital payments ecosystem in India and provide a secure and seamless experience to PhonePe users.
