PM Modi in Bhutan: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not planned to visit Bhutan just like that. Many strategists believe that China’s strategy of building a dam on the Brahmaputra river can probably be solved only by Bhutan.
New Delhi. These days, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a visit to our neighboring and our closest friend country Bhutan. This visit of PM Modi is considered very important in view of China’s recent announcement and strategy. China had recently announced that it is going to build the world’s largest dam on the Brahmaputra River. With this announcement by China, both the challenges and difficulties of India increased and the PM Modi led government started finding a solution to it. All experts believe that Prime Minister Narendra’s recent visit to Bhutan is also a part of this exercise.
Bhutan is not only our most reliable partner, but it can also become the biggest obstacle to China’s dam strategy. India and Bhutan are very close to each other and are running many projects together. If PM Modi makes Bhutan a part of his recent strategy, then there is a strong possibility that China’s plan to build a dam on the Brahmaputra river may fail or it may go ahead with its project with some conditions. For now, let us investigate how Bhutan can stand together against us and to what extent it can help us against China’s designs. There are 4 major areas where Bhutan can be of great use to us.
Biggest contribution to hydrological data
China has announced to build 60 thousand MW Medog Project in Yarlung Tsangpe located in Tibet. China and Bhutan are the upstream countries of the Brahmaputra river, while India, Nepal and Bangladesh are the downstream countries. Bhutan is part of the Brahmaputra Basin and is also pursuing hydropower cooperation with India since 1949. This creates a strategic balance against China. Bhutan also collects real-time water flow data of Manas and Sankosh tributaries of Brahmaputra in its territory and shares it with India. Earlier China also used to share data, but from the year 2022 it stopped data sharing. At present Bhutan can fulfill this deficiency.
