Arbi is often known only for its root, but its flowers and leaves are also considered a treasure of health. The nutrients present in them improve digestion, strengthen immunity and take care of heart health. From blood sugar control to eyesight, arbi is said to have many benefits. This is the reason why the Ministry of AYUSH also gives information about its medicinal properties and advises its consumption.
Arbi flowers and leaves are not limited to just enhancing the taste, but are also considered very beneficial from health point of view. The dishes made from these help in strengthening the digestive system, increasing immunity, keeping the heart healthy, controlling blood sugar and taking care of eyes. Often people use only the root or tuber of taro, but there is plenty of nutrition hidden in its flowers and leaves too.
Taro is also known as Colocasia esculenta or taro. The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India also gives information about the medicinal properties of Arbi and advises its consumption in the right way. In Ayurveda, Arbi is considered a nutritious and energy giving food, which strengthens the body from within. The special thing is that its different parts are used in different ways.
Arbi leaves and flowers are rich in nutrients. Fiber, potassium, magnesium, vitamin C and vitamin E are found in good quantities in them. These elements keep digestion healthy, reduce the problem of constipation and improve intestinal health. Due to the high fiber content, the stomach remains full for a long time, which also helps in controlling weight. At the same time, Vitamin C strengthens the immunity of the body and increases the strength to fight infection.
In India, pakodas, vegetables and many traditional dishes are made from taro leaves. At the same time, in countries like Islands, Vanuatu and New Guinea, bunches of edible colocasia flowers are eaten cooked or fried. ‘Achu Soup’ i.e. yellow soup made from these flowers is not only considered nutritious there, but also has cultural importance. Along with giving energy, this soup also provides essential nutrients to the body.
Arbi is also considered beneficial in controlling blood sugar and cholesterol. The resistant starch and fiber present in it help in keeping the blood sugar level balanced, due to which it can be useful for diabetes patients. Potassium improves heart health and helps in reducing bad cholesterol. Apart from this, the anti-inflammatory properties present in taro reduce inflammation, which can provide relief from problems like joint pain and arthritis.
