Alwar. Today, sugar has become a serious health problem for both children and adults. The increasing amount of sugar in the diet of children is deeply affecting their health. Keeping this in mind, sugar boards are being installed in schools under the guidelines of CBSE Board and Government of India so that students can be made aware about the harm of sugar and balanced eating habits. This effort is also important because sugar related problems are increasing rapidly in small children and parents and teachers need to be aware of it and take steps.
Dr. Roop Singh of the Red Cross Society says that having correct information about nutrition has become more important today than ever before. Under the leadership of Rotary Club Bhiwadi President Rajesh Aggarwal, a campaign to install sugar boards in various schools of the city is being run. Its purpose is to make children and teachers understand what they are eating and how much sugar is present in that food. Dr. Singh says that the obesity rate among school children has reached more than 50 percent, which can cause serious diseases in the future.
Why is sugar board important?
Dr. Roop Singh explains that the daily food items consumed by children contain very high amount of sugar. For example, a cold drink contains about 6 teaspoons of sugar. About 11 teaspoons of sugar is found in one pastry. One ice cream contains 8 to 10 teaspoons of sugar. Consuming such a large amount of sugar at a young age can later lead to diseases like obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Therefore, sugar boards being installed in schools play a big role in making children aware.
Which food is right?
In the Sugar Board, food is divided into three categories. Red category includes food items like cold drinks, pizza, pasta which contain high amount of sugar, fat and salt. Yellow category includes light food like poha, porridge, khichdi which can be consumed in limited quantity. Green category includes natural foods like green vegetables, leafy vegetables, fruits and sprouted grains which should be consumed more. Besides, children are also being advised to minimize the consumption of packaged food and if they have to, then eat it only once or twice a month.
