Guardiola knew that Arsenal were building a team capable of chasing a championship. He’s waiting to see if they have the stamina to maintain their fast start.
“The last two or three years, after the process of rebuilding the club and the team, Arsenal is there. What they are doing for two or three seasons is exceptional,” said Guardiola.
“But it’s early November. Nobody wins the title in early November. You can lose it, but nobody wins it.”
“I know how quickly things change. A week ago it was ‘disaster, disaster’ for Liverpool and now they win two and the question is ‘have they returned to their best level?’
“I’m sure the managers take a little more perspective on the situation.
“There are always ups and downs in a season.”
Liverpool manager Slot is equally convinced there may be twists and turns in the title race, but the importance of this match cannot be evaded or underestimated.
Slot said: “At the moment, it’s not about looking at the league standings. It’s just about trying to win as many games as you can and get the best position possible.”
“But definitely two very good teams are going to play against each other and we’ll see what the future will bring.
“Our only goal is ourselves. We have to make constant improvement, get the players fit and then see where it takes us.”
“City is a game in itself. Playing against them away from home is one of the most difficult challenges we have throughout the season. These are the games that everyone looks forward to.”
Slot’s return to his title-winning midfield of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai has given Liverpool a more familiar and winning look in their last two matches against Aston Villa and Real Madrid, with Hungarian Szoboszlai a key figure.
“Dominik has been spectacular all season,” Slot said, “but the last two games got even more out of the team and him. I really like his work off the ball, but in these games he was probably even above his high standards.”
If Liverpool can win the midfield battle at the Etihad Stadium, they will believe they can thrive, but an improving Manchester City will feel equally confident.
The stage is set for the last titanic battle.
