Counting of votes is going on for the MCD by-elections held in 12 wards of the capital Delhi. In this election, the eyes of Delhiites are especially focused on Shalimar Bagh-B ward. Well, why not… This has been the ward of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Rekha Gupta had been the councilor of this ward before becoming CM and this ward had become vacant after her resignation.
In the counting of votes so far in Shalimar Bagh-B ward, BJP candidate Anita Jain has taken a huge lead. She is leading by more than 5000 votes against her nearest rival and Aam Aadmi Party candidate Babita Rana. Apart from this, Sarita Kumari is also in the election field from Congress. Although he is at third position.
BJP candidate Anita has studied till B.Com, while Babita is a lawyer by profession. Whereas the Congress candidate describes herself as tenth pass. In terms of assets, he is the richest BJP candidate. According to the election affidavit, apart from movable assets worth Rs 58,90,173, he has shown cash of Rs 95,000. Whereas the AAP candidate has movable assets worth Rs 38,29,349 along with Rs 1 lakh 24 thousand 530 cash, whereas he has not given any information about immovable assets. Apart from this, the Congress candidate has shown a total of Rs 11,90,700 along with 75,000 cash and 10 tola gold jewellery.
Analysts say that in urban wards like Shalimar Bagh-B, where the everyday problems of citizens like cleanliness, water supply sustainability, traffic, garbage and basic amenities matter more. There, both the personal background of the candidates and their commitments are important.
On the other hand, preparations for counting have been completed and officials are saying that counting of votes will start from 8 am today and the results will be clear within some time. This election result is not only for this ward, but will also indicate what is the thinking of the voters in many urban wards of Delhi between development, local problems and transparency-priority.
