In Ayurveda, it is considered beneficial in throat swelling, cough, acidity, burning sensation in the mouth, ulcers and digestive problems. A piece or powder of liquorice taken in small quantities gives a balancing effect to the body. This keeps the stomach calm, provides relief from cough and reduces throat stiffness. But the problem increases when people start taking it in excessive quantities in order to get quick relief.

How much quantity is safe and when is it harmful?
Dr. Rajkumar says that the safe quantity of liquorice is considered to be 2 to 5 grams in a day. It can be taken in the form of tea, decoction or simple powder. But if someone starts taking liquorice in excess of this quantity, then glycyrrhizin starts increasing in the body and its side effects start appearing. First of all, blood pressure can increase rapidly. Some people start feeling swelling in their feet, face or body. Consuming it in large quantities continuously causes problem of increase in sodium and decrease in potassium in the body. Deficiency of potassium can increase problems like weakness, fast heartbeat, fatigue, dizziness, pain and muscle strain. In many cases, consuming liquorice in excessive amounts can also affect the heart.
Why do people make the mistake of taking liquorice daily?
As the weather changes, many people start sucking liquorice tablets when they feel sore throat. Doing this for several days can prove harmful for the body. Similarly, one or two cups of liquorice tea a day is fine, but if someone starts drinking it frequently then the side effects may increase. Pregnant women should consume liquorice in very small quantities and only after consulting the doctor because excessive consumption can cause hormonal changes. People who already have high blood pressure, heart problems or kidney problems should use liquorice with extreme caution.
