Side Effect of Obesity: Obesity has a negative impact on the body’s ability to move. Excess weight also causes wear and tear of bones, which can lead to pain in the waist and joints. What is the solution for this? Here you can know from orthopedics expert.
In today’s fast-paced life, we often become careless about our weight. But do you know that increasing weight not only changes your appearance, but also silently affects the everyday functioning of your body? First of all, its burden falls on your knees and waist, those parts which keep supporting you throughout the day.
Dr. Deepak Raina, Senior Director and Unit Head, Orthopedics and Knee Replacement Expert at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Dwarka, explains that our knees and spine bear the entire weight of the body, absorb shocks and help us move comfortably. But when the body weight exceeds their capacity, these parts start wearing out quickly. Due to which there is pain, stiffness and difficulty in walking.
How obesity weakens joints
According to the doctor, a slight increase in body weight puts manifold pressure on the knees. With every step, the load on the knees is 3–4 times the body weight. In such a situation, if the weight is more than 10-15 kg, then it is as if the burden of several sacks of cement has been placed on the knees every day. Over time, the cartilage of the knees begins to wear away, causing pain, swelling and “crunching” sounds when walking.
Back pain is also related to increased weight
Fat accumulated around the stomach disturbs the balance of the body. Due to this, the waist has to work harder to keep the body straight. Core muscles get tired quickly, ligaments get stretched and pressure on the spinal discs increases. This is the reason why one starts feeling constant back pain, bending and feeling tired.
What is the solution?
According to the doctor, this problem can be easily solved by keeping a few things in mind. It is important to reduce it to save the bones from getting worn out due to weight. In such a situation, for this you can do light exercise like walking, swimming or cycling and eat a balanced diet. If obesity is very high then it is important to consult a doctor.
