India showed strictness on the statement of 7-sisters, Bangladesh High Commissioner summoned

India-Bangladesh News: Ever since the democratically elected government of Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power in Bangladesh as a part of a conspiracy, the situation in the neighboring country is going from bad to worse. During the reign of Mohammad Yunus, India-Bangladesh relations have reached an all-time low. Anti-India and provocative statements are being made continuously by Bangladeshi leaders. Now India has taken a strict stance regarding this. The Ministry of External Affairs has summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner Mohammad Riyaz Hamidullah on Wednesday, 17 December 2025 and expressed its objection and unhappiness over the statements made by Bangladeshi leaders on the security of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka and the Seven Sisters (7 states of the North-East).

India has taken a tough stance regarding the threats received by the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh and the anti-India statements of some leaders there. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner Riyaz Hamidullah and lodged a formal protest. The Foreign Ministry said that India has serious concerns about the deteriorating security situation in Bangladesh. Special attention was drawn to the activities of those radical elements who have announced to create a security crisis around the Indian Mission in Dhaka. However, India did not clarify what kind of threat the Indian High Commission had received. It is noteworthy that after widespread unrest in Bangladesh in August 2024, India had already recalled non-essential staff and their families from its High Commission.

India’s strict stance

MEA said in its statement that fundamentalist elements are trying to create a false narrative against India regarding the recent incidents in Bangladesh, which India completely rejects. India also said that the interim government of Bangladesh neither investigated these incidents in depth nor shared any concrete evidence with India. This comment is in the context of the allegations by Bangladeshi leaders that India was accused of influencing the elections in Bangladesh. India reiterated that its relations with the people of Bangladesh are rooted in the struggle for independence and have been strengthened by development and people-to-people contacts. India supports peace, stability and free, fair and peaceful elections in Bangladesh. Also, India expressed hope that the Bangladesh government will fulfill its diplomatic responsibilities and ensure the security of the foreign missions present there.

Provocative statement regarding ‘Seven Sisters’

This step of India has come at a time when Bangladesh’s National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Hasnat Abdullah gave a sharp statement against India in a public meeting. He said Dhaka could harbor anti-India and separatist forces and help separate India’s northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura—or the ‘Seven Sisters’ from India. Some people present in the meeting also applauded this statement. India has previously alleged that in the late 1990s and early 2000s, some militant groups in northeastern India used Bangladesh for shelter, transportation and support. Apart from this, India has also expressed concern from time to time about the activities of some Islamic extremist organizations.

Tension increased between the two countries

In recent times, the interim government of Bangladesh has also accused India that anti-Bangladesh activities are taking place from Indian soil. India has completely rejected these allegations and said that it has never allowed its soil to be used against the interests of Bangladesh. It is noteworthy that tension in India-Bangladesh relations has increased due to the fall of Sheikh Hasina government after student movements in August 2024. Since Sheikh Hasina’s arrival in India, the rhetoric and diplomatic tension between the two countries has intensified.
