Bhaghar village of Imamganj block area of Gaya district is famous for ginger cultivation. Ginger has been cultivated here for the last 40 years. The special thing is that people are earning more profits by growing ginger than traditional crops.
Went. Ginger is cultivated on a large scale in Gaya district of Bihar. Bhaghar village of Imamganj block area of the district is known for ginger cultivation and ginger cultivation has been going on here for the last 40 years. Here, ginger is cultivated in 12 to 15 bighas every year. This ginger is sent to the districts of North Bihar. Almost every farmer of the village is associated with this farming.
Ginger yield is more than paddy and wheat crops
Situated on the banks of Morhar river, this village has loamy soil and ginger is also grown in abundance in this soil. According to the farmers of the village, up to four quintals of ginger is produced in one bunch. It is said that ginger has more profits as compared to paddy, wheat and other crops and this is the reason why every farmer of this village is engaged in ginger farming leaving aside other farming. Raw ginger is easily sold for ₹60 per kg.
Sales halted due to river
Farmers do not have to worry about selling ginger and big traders from North Bihar reach this village and purchase ginger. Its demand is very high during Chhath Puja. However, this year the farmers here have not been able to sell their crops. The reason behind this is that Bhaghar village is surrounded by a river and due to water in the river, traders could not reach this village. Farmers had given some ginger to traders at throwaway prices, but ginger is still grown on a large scale in the fields.
Ginger will be compensated by selling dry ginger
However, the farmers here believe that they do not regret not selling raw ginger. It will be used as dry ginger. Dry ginger is available at good price in the markets. The price of 1 kg dry ginger is around Rs 600 to Rs 700. 1 kg dry ginger is prepared from 4 kg raw ginger. Dry ginger is also used as medicine. Village farmers Naresh Prasad Dangi and Ravindra Prasad say that there is a lot of demand for their ginger in the local market also.
More demand for local goods, higher prices
Here farmers cultivate indigenous variety of ginger. It is used in tea and making medicine. The rate of this ginger is also higher as compared to hybrid ginger. Planting is done in the month of July itself and harvesting is done in the month of December. Shade is required in its cultivation. It is said that the farmers of the village earn an income of Rs 50-60 lakh every year from ginger cultivation. If farmers are to be believed, if a bridge is constructed on the river, their business can expand further and their income can also increase.
