Rare Earth: India has taken strong steps to achieve self-reliance regarding rare earth minerals. A company in UP has started production of rare earth, which has a capacity of 2,000 tonnes.
New Delhi. Recently, the production of rare minerals whose supply was stopped by China with the intention of harming the Indian manufacturing sector and curbing exports, has now started in UP. This rare mineral named rare earth is used in making everything from e-vehicles to solar panels and semiconductors. Not only India, the entire world currently depends on China for rare earths. But, after this incident, India has taken a big step towards its production.
Lohum, a critical minerals producer and processing company, has announced the launch of a rare earth magnet production facility in Uttar Pradesh with an investment of Rs 500 crore. The production capacity of this plant will be 2,000 tonnes. The company said that this plant, established with an investment of Rs 500 crore, is an important step towards increasing India’s self-reliance in the field of rare earth magnets and critical minerals.
Both light and heavy minerals will come out
The company said that from this production unit, both light and heavy rare earth minerals will be refined and produced, which are important for advanced technology, electric transportation, renewable energy, aerospace, defense, electronics etc. Lohum said that this investment is in line with government measures, including the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM), to reduce our dependence on China.
Country’s manufacturing will get strength
Rajat Verma, Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Lohum, said the facility fills an important gap in India’s manufacturing value chain. Rare earth elements are fundamental to our country’s clean energy ambitions and strategic industries. By establishing domestic production capabilities, we are not only reducing dependence on imports, but also building a strong, sustainable supply chain that will support India’s growth for decades to come.
90 percent production in China
Most of the rare earth production takes place in China. 90 percent of the world’s rare earth minerals are produced here and almost all countries are dependent on it. Rare earth is used in making everything from e-vehicles to semiconductors and solar panels for solar energy. This same thing is used in all electronic devices and this is the reason why China wants to maintain its monopoly on its supply all over the world. After the recent episode, India has taken steps in this direction to achieve self-reliance.
