Addis Ababa. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s global popularity and diplomacy has once again hit the African continent. PM Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Ethiopia, has been honored with the highest civilian honor ‘Great Honor Nishan of Ethiopia’. This honor is a great recognition of the age-old relations between India and Ethiopia and PM Modi’s leadership of the ‘Global South’.
Grand welcome in Addis Ababa Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali not only welcomed PM Modi with the traditional ‘Coffee Ceremony’, but also gave him the message of how special India is to him by giving him the country’s most prestigious award. PM Modi has dedicated this honor to 140 crore Indians.
What is Great Honor Mark?
This honor received by PM Modi is a symbol of the glorious history of the Ethiopian Empire.
140 years old history: This honor was started by Ethiopian Emperor Menelik II in 1884-85. It was also originally known as ‘The Order of the Star of Ethiopia’.
Who gets: This honor has historically been given to foreign monarchs, heads of state and distinguished individuals who have served Ethiopia or taken bilateral relations to new heights.
28th international honor
This honor adds another big chapter to the list of PM Modi’s international achievements. Along with this award from Ethiopia, PM Modi has so far received about 28 highest civilian honors from different countries of the world. In the last few years, he has been honored with his highest honors by countries like Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Palau, Egypt, France, and most recently in July 2025, Namibia and Brazil.
