AIIMS Delhi and IIT Delhi Capsule for gut Health: IIT Delhi and AIIMS New Delhi have jointly created a capsule which, after being swallowed, will open the entire coil of the small intestine. This capsule will not only be able to collect samples of bacteria present in the small intestine but will also be helpful in studying the microorganisms present in it. Its most important thing is that now there will be no need to resort to endoscopy or surgery for gut health and it will be possible to do research based on the results of this device.
Till now, endoscopy technique is used to take samples of small intestine, which is quite painful. In some cases, stool test is also done. However, this small capsule like device made now can prove to be a big achievement, because with its use neither the patient will face any problem and the results will also be better.
This device has just been used on animals and will soon be used on humans.
According to the news published in Medical Dialogue, this device has been tested on animals and has also been successful. In the test, micro capsules as small as a grain of rice were used, which proved to be completely safe and did not cause any injury or swelling. Soon it will be used for human trials. If everything goes well then it can prove to be a great device for gut health.
How does this device work?
These small capsule-like devices have to be swallowed. After swallowing, it reaches the stomach but due to the more acidic environment there, it does not become active and then reaches the small intestine in the same way. Due to the less acidic environment here, it opens and becomes active and collects samples of intestinal fluid and bacteria. After taking the sample, this device closes itself and then comes out through the toilet.
When this device comes out with the sample, the fluid inside it is taken out and examined and the disease can be detected.

Regarding this, Dr. Samagra Aggarwal, Assistant Professor, Department of Gastroenterology, AIIMS, says, ‘Microbes of the small intestine give early signs of many diseases. If we understand these changes in time, the disease can be identified early and treatment can be more effective.
Almost half of the total cells present in our body are made up of microbes. These microbes live mainly in our intestines and influence digestion, immune system, mood and many other essential physiological processes. However, till now it was very difficult to directly study these microbes present in the small intestine.
