IndiGo Airline Disruptions: After the major operational crisis that the country’s largest domestic airline IndiGo had to face earlier this month, this matter has now come under regulatory scrutiny. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Thursday clarified that it has decided to proceed with the investigation against IndiGo under competition laws.
Now CCI is keeping a close eye
In fact, since the beginning of December, Indigo had canceled hundreds of flights, due to which thousands of passengers across the country faced huge inconvenience and created an atmosphere of chaos at the airports. CCI said in a statement that it had received a complaint against IndiGo regarding the disruptions in flights on various routes in the aviation sector, after preliminary assessment of which it was found that the matter required further investigation.
It is noteworthy that Indigo holds more than 65 percent share in the domestic aviation market, hence the disruptions in its operations have a direct impact on passengers and the entire sector. For this reason, questions are being raised in some circles whether IndiGo’s strong market position has given rise to competition related issues.
DGCA is investigating
On the other hand, aviation safety regulator DGCA is also separately investigating the disruptions in flights and the operational management of the airline. Meanwhile, IndiGo CEO Peter Albers has assured employees and passengers that the company has come out of the worst and now its focus is on strengthening operations, reviewing the root causes of the crisis and moving forward with confidence again.
However, pending the outcome of the CCI and DGCA investigations, regulatory pressure will remain on IndiGo and it will be important to see whether these flight cancellations will be considered mere operational lapses or whether any strict action will be taken from the perspective of violation of competition laws.
