49-year-old Michael Morrow from New York did such a feat in September that people are surprised to hear about. He jumped into the water off the south side of Manhattan and, despite being handcuffed, completed the famous ’20 Bridges Swim’, a distance of approximately 28.5 miles (45.8 kilometers) through the East River, Harlem River, and the Hudson River. The most surprising thing is that he completed the entire journey in less than 10 hours. This feat earned him not one, but two Guinness World Records – the longest open water swim in handcuffs and the record for being the first and fastest swimmer to circumnavigate New York City while in handcuffs. According to Moro’s partner and experienced open-water swimmer Capri Jatiasmoro, this achievement is an example not only of courage, but also of mental and physical fortitude. He said that open water swimming often gives such a thrill which is difficult to describe in words.
How did this journey begin?
Moro says that he has been connected with water since childhood. He won many national championships during his school and college days but then life got busy with work and responsibilities and he gave up swimming for about 20 years. Around the age of forty, water called him again. Looking at open water veterans like Diana Niad and Ross Edgley on social media, he felt he still had a lot of potential left in him, but he wanted a goal that was bigger than his past accomplishments. It’s like breaking boundaries. From here he chose the ultra marathon open-water swimming competition. Which means swimming of more than 10 kilometers in difficult natural conditions.
