IMD Weather Today: Winter weather has not only arrived, but has also engulfed most of the areas from North to East India. Melting is increasing due to continuous drop in temperature. At the same time, the effect of western disturbance is now clearly visible in the high hilly states. The National Highway had to be closed due to heavy snowfall. More snowfall has been predicted in the coming days.
IMD Weather Today: The dense fog that has been falling in most parts of North and Eastern India including Delhi-NCR for the last few days has derailed normal life. On Saturday, December 20, 2025, the blanket of fog became so thick that a situation like an undeclared lockdown was created. The speed of cars, buses, planes and trains all slowed down. Because of this thousands of people remained stranded everywhere. Dozens of flights had to be cancelled, while a large number of superfast, mail and passenger trains including Rajdhani-Duronto reached their destinations late by hours. In the early morning of Sunday 21st December, the people of Delhi and NCR were hopeful of getting relief. There was no fog for some time in the morning due to icy wind, but the brief relief soon vanished. Suddenly a thick blanket of fog engulfed Delhi-NCR. There has been heavy snowfall in the high altitude areas of Jammu-Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh due to the activation of Western Disturbance. The wind speed is also higher than normal. Its impact has also affected the plains. At the same time, due to snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar-Ladakh National Highway had to be closed. On the other hand, the AQI level in Delhi has crossed the benchmark of 450, which is very dangerous from health point of view.
The weather is going to be harsh in the coming days in many states of North India and Central India. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning saying that there is a strong possibility of dense to very dense fog during night and morning in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana till the morning of 21st December. Apart from this, fog can also increase problems in some areas of Punjab and Haryana between 25th and 27th December. According to the Meteorological Department, dense fog conditions may occur in Western Uttar Pradesh on 26 and 27 December, while in Eastern Uttar Pradesh on 22, 26 and 27 December. There is a possibility of fog in Jharkhand on 21st and 22nd December and in Madhya Pradesh till the morning of 21st December. Due to fog, road and rail traffic as well as flights may be affected. Meanwhile, in some parts of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, there is a possibility of cold day to severe cold day conditions on 20th December. This means that even during the day the temperature may remain much lower than normal, which will further increase the cold.

Estimate of temperature fluctuations
The Meteorological Department has also issued a forecast regarding the minimum temperature. According to this, there may be a gradual increase of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in the minimum temperature in North-West India during the next three days. After this, the temperature is likely to drop by 2 to 4 degrees in the next four days. No major change is expected in the minimum temperature in Eastern India for the next four days, but after this the temperature may drop by 2 to 3 degrees. The temperature will remain stable in Gujarat region for the next two days, then a drop of 2 to 3 degrees may be recorded in three days. There is no possibility of any significant change in the minimum temperature for the next seven days in Maharashtra, Central India and North-East India.

The Meteorological Department has also issued warnings related to cold wave and cold for many states. Cold wave may occur in Central Maharashtra and South Interior Karnataka on 21 and 22 December. Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions may occur in North Interior Karnataka between 21st and 23rd December. There is a possibility of cold wave in Telangana also from 21st to 23rd December. There may be cold day conditions in some areas of Bihar on 20th and 21st December. Cold Day warning has also been issued in Uttarakhand and Eastern Uttar Pradesh on 21st December.
Rain and snowfall, NH closed
There is a possibility of light to moderate rain and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad during the next three days. There may be rain and snowfall in some areas in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand also. Especially on December 21, a warning has been given of heavy rain or snowfall at some places in Kashmir Valley. Due to heavy snowfall in the valley, Srinagar-Ladakh National Highway had to be closed.
