Kavita Chand of Uttarakhand created history, hoisted the tricolor by conquering Antarctica’s highest peak Mount Vinson.

Almora’s daughter, 40-year-old endurance athlete Kavita Chand has brought glory to the country and Uttarakhand by successfully climbing Antarctica’s highest peak Mount Vinson (4,892 metres). There is an atmosphere of happiness and pride in the entire country due to his historic achievement.

Mount Elbrus has also been destroyed

This success of Kavita Chand is being considered an important achievement in the direction of her ambitious ‘Seven Summits’ campaign. Under this challenge, the highest peaks of all seven continents of the world are climbed. However, before this, Kavita has also conquered Mount Elbrus, the highest peak of Europe, which has further strengthened her path to achieve this goal.

Climbing Mount Vinson is not easy

Let us tell you that climbing Mount Vinson, which is among the most difficult mountain peaks in the world, is not so easy. Extreme cold, strong winds, long solitude and the unpredictable weather of Antarctica test the stamina and mental strength of the climbers.

How did you complete the mission?

This campaign of Kavita started with her departure from India on 3 December. She reached Punta Arenas, Chile on 4 December, from where she took off for Union Glacier on 7 December. After this she reached Mount Vinson Base Camp situated at an altitude of about 2,100 meters. The journey from Union Glacier to Base Camp was covered by small ski-equipped aircraft.

This challenging expedition was led by the famous high-altitude guide Mingma David Sherpa. The Indian team also got the support of experienced mountaineer Bharat Thammineni and his expedition company ‘Boots and Crampons’. The 9-member Indian team successfully achieved this difficult target on the basis of better acclimatization, precise strategy and mutual coordination.
