Srinagar. The issue of removing the veil of a female doctor is gaining momentum. People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti on Friday attacked Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Union Minister Giriraj Singh for supporting him on this issue. Mehbooba Mufti gave the example of Draupadi’s disrobing in Mahabharata and said that moral degradation begins when humiliation is normalized and publicly applauded. He said that insensitive thinking towards dignity and equality is extremely worrying. He further said, “I have no expectations from leaders who continuously promote such narratives.” He also expressed disappointment over Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and said that being in a position of responsibility, he should have taken action.
Commenting on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Union Minister Giriraj Singh, Mehbooba Mufti said that India is a secular country, it is the country of Gandhi, who sacrificed his life for this country. Expressing regret, he said that today some leaders seem to be moving away from these values. He said, “When leaders like Giriraj Singh adopt divisive statements and conduct, it looks more like Kaurava Rajya than Ram Rajya where injustice prevails and women are insulted.”
PDP President Mehbooba Mufti said that Jammu and Kashmir is going through a very difficult situation since 2019. He said that PDP has always tried to live up to the expectations of the people and protect their land as was done yesterday in Pulwama. Mehbooba Mufti alleged that people’s voices were not heard, that is why houses are being demolished. “Land is our right and it is important to protect it,” he stressed. On this issue, he appealed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene and reconsider the bill presented by PDP in the Assembly.
What is the whole controversy
The video of the woman removing her niqab went viral on social media and has created a big political controversy. The incident took place at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, where Kumar was giving appointment letters to AYUSH doctors. When the woman came to collect her appointment letter, Nitish Kumar saw her niqab and asked, ‘What is this?’ After this he removed the mask.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh created a new controversy on Thursday by defending Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in the matter of removing the niqab of a Muslim female doctor. Singh said it was up to the woman to reject the government job or “go to hell.” Singh defended Nitish Kumar, saying he had “done nothing wrong”.
The Union Minister argued, “If someone is going to take the appointment letter, should he not show his face? Is this an Islamic country? Nitish Kumar played the role of a guardian.” He said, “If you go to get a passport made, don’t you show your face? When you go to the airport, don’t you show your face? People talk about Pakistan and England, but this is India. There is rule of law in India.” Singh said that Nitish Kumar did the right thing. On reports of the woman refusing to accept the job after this incident, the Union Minister said, “She should refuse, or go to hell. It is her choice.”
