Araria: Rajan Kumar, a farmer from Bagulaha village of Araria district of Bihar, is in the news for his farming. Rajan Kumar has earned good income from paddy cultivation a few months ago. Now he is busy in potato farming. Rajan told Local 18 that for potato cultivation, proper plowing of the field and balanced use of organic and chemical fertilizers is very important. Rajan Kumar has been cultivating potatoes for three years.
Farmer Rajan Kumar told that he has been cultivating potatoes for the last three years. This season he has sown potatoes on one acre of land. According to Rajan, one earns about Rs 1.5 to 2 lakh from potato cultivation on one acre of land.
Better production from improved potato varieties
Rajan has used improved variety of potato seeds procured from big markets, which gives a yield of about 90 quintals per acre. 10-12 quintals of seeds are required on one acre of land and the crop is ready in just 70-80 days.
Farmers benefit from increasing demand for potatoes
According to Rajan, the demand for potato vegetable is continuously increasing. Farmers who harvest their crops in December get good prices. He said, currently the price of potato is Rs 40 per kg. However, after the new crop arrives, this price reduces to Rs 10-20 per kg.
More profits at less cost
Rajan Kumar told that the cost of potato cultivation is low and the profit is high. Farmers can earn good income if the crop is ready at the right time and gets a fair price. He said, we try to ensure that the quality of the crop is good and it is sold in the market on time, so that maximum profit can be achieved.
Rajan Kumar became an inspiration for farmers
Rajan Kumar’s hard work and technical knowledge has not only made him self-reliant, but he is also becoming an inspiration for other farmers. It is clear from the success of his potato farming that with the right technology and hard work, farming can be made profitable. He told that apart from this, he cultivates maize on 4 acres of land. Along with this, he earns up to Rs 7 lakh in a season from wheat and paddy farming.
