Rishikesh: New Year is celebrated in the world on 1 January, but in Hindu religion the New Year does not start from this date. According to the Hindu calendar, the Hindu New Year starts from Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. In the year 2026, the Hindu new year will start on Thursday, March 19, 2026. Vikram Samvat 2083 will be considered as the beginning from this day. Hindu New Year is not just a day of changing calendar, but it is considered to be a symbol of the beginning of a new cycle of creation, religion and nature. There are many religious beliefs associated with this day, in which the special importance of both Lord Brahma and Lord Shri Ram has been mentioned.
During a conversation with Local 18, Mahant Rameshwar Giri told that according to the Hindu calendar, the new year starts on the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. In the year 2026, this date is falling on 19 March. According to religious beliefs, Lord Brahma created the universe on this day. Therefore this day is also called the first day of creation. This is the reason why Hindu New Year is considered extremely auspicious and sacred and starting new works from this day is considered beneficial.
What is religious belief?
The belief related to Lord Shri Ram is also very important behind celebrating Hindu New Year. It is believed that the coronation of Lord Shri Ram took place on the day of Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. When Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya after the victory of Lanka and 14 years of exile, he was made the king of Ayodhya on this date. Ramrajya is considered a symbol of religion, justice and ideal governance. For this reason, the Hindu New Year is seen as associated with the establishment of religion and the beginning of an ideal life.
Time of beginning of new agricultural cycle
The Hindu New Year is calculated on the basis of the movement of the Moon and the Sun. Spring season arrives around Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. At this time new life appears in nature. New buds appear on trees, flowers bloom and freshness is felt in the weather. For the farmers also, this time indicates the beginning of a new crop and a new agricultural cycle. In this way, the Hindu New Year reflects the deep connection between nature and human life.
Hindu New Year is celebrated with different names in different states of India. In Maharashtra it is called Gudi Padwa, where Gudi is hoisted as a symbol of victory and prosperity. It is celebrated as Ugadi in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. In North India it is called Nav Samvatsar and Chaitra Navratri also starts from this day. Its traditions may be different in every region, but the feeling and purpose is the same.
