Mamata Banerjee: Before the assembly elections to be held in West Bengal in March-April next year, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made a big move. He has made a big announcement in direct response to the Central Government’s Vikas Bharat Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural) (VB-G RAM G) Bill. He said that the state’s rural employment guarantee scheme ‘Karmashree’ will now be named after Mahatma Gandhi. This announcement was made at the Bengal Business and Industry Conclave on Thursday.
Bengal government runs Karmashree scheme with its own funds.
He told that the state government is running its Karmashree scheme with its own funds. We have created a lot of workdays under Karmashree. Even if the central fund stops, we will provide work to the people. We are not beggars. The Karmashree scheme, launched in 2024 in West Bengal, has provided 101.5 crore person-days of work to more than 90 lakh job card holders. This scheme is the state’s own initiative, which was started after the cut in MNREGA funds of the Centre.
This step of Mamta is not only a political answer, but is also being considered a symbol of showing respect towards Gandhiji. The state government will soon bring a bill in the Assembly to officially link Karmashree’s name with Mahatma Gandhi. This decision may spark a new debate in Bengal politics, where Trinamool Congress has been continuously opposing the policies of the Centre.
