Italy was able to qualify for the first time in the T20 World Cup because of Joe Burns. Now it has been learned that Burns himself will not be able to come to India-Sri Lanka to play the tournament. Burns, who left Australia and reached Italy for the sake of cricket, will not be able to play for Italy in the World Cup due to technical rules. Now Italy has appointed Madsen as its captain.
Rome: Former Australia batsman Joe Burns, who played a key role in Italy qualifying for the T20 World Cup for the first time, will not be able to play in the competition to be held in India and Sri Lanka early next year as availability issues are hindering the contract signed between him and the Italian Cricket Federation.
The federation has appointed Wayne Madsen as captain in place of 36-year-old Burns. Burns made his debut for Italy last year after completing the mandatory ‘cooling off’ period after playing his last international match for Australia in 2020.
He was appointed captain of Italy earlier this year. It was under his captaincy that Italy played in the qualification tournament. “Discussions over the past few weeks have failed to reach a full consensus on his availability, and as a result, he has not signed a contract and has been replaced by Wayne Madsen as captain,” the federation said in a statement.
