Sugarcane Farming Trench Method: Sugarcane is a major cash crop in UP. Farmers have been earning good money from its cultivation. But if they change their farming method a little, then the cost can be less and the earning can be more. This is what the progressive farmer Lambardar Tiwari of Gonda did. Today he is a well-known farmer of the area. Local 18 went to his fields and talked to this farmer.
Gonda. Sugarcane is cultivated by many methods. Trench Method is one of them. Lambardar Tiwari, a farmer from Mankapur development block of Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh, has also adopted this technique. This method reduces costs and gives higher yields. While talking to Local 18, farmer Lambardar says that in trench method, deep drains i.e. trenches are made in the field. The depth of these drains is kept at 25 to 30 centimeters and the distance is kept at about 90 to 120 centimeters. Sugarcane seeds (sets) are sown in these drains. Lambardar Tiwari studied till 10th class. Since then he is cultivating sugarcane. Earlier they used to cultivate sugarcane by sowing seeds. Then he came to know about the trench method. He adopted it immediately.
Where did the idea come from?
Lambardar Tiwari tells that we had gone to a farmer’s house to collect sugarcane seeds. I saw that sugarcane was being sown in their place by trench method. That farmer explained the benefits of the trench method. Lambardar says that we started the trench method with 1 acre. Initially, when I sowed through trench method, the villagers made fun of me. He said, you are leaving a lot of space in the sugarcane field. What will be the benefit out of this. You will suffer a lot of loss. When the sugarcane was ready, its consistency was good and the thickness was also quite good.
how much yield per acre
Lambardar says that at present we are cultivating sugarcane in about 4 acres by trench method.
More than 500 quintals of sugarcane is grown in 1 acre. 1 acre costs 50 to 60 thousand rupees. Lambardar Tiwari says that he has been honored twice by Mankapur Sugar Mill for sugarcane cultivation.
