In winter, the question often arises whether women feel less cold, but the truth is the opposite. Many studies show that women feel cold more than men, especially in hands and feet. Many reasons are responsible behind this like hormonal changes, metabolism, body fat and everyday lifestyle.
Do girls really feel less cold? This question often becomes a topic of discussion in winter. At some places girls are seen roaming around comfortably even in sweaters, while at some places men are seen complaining of cold even after wearing many layers of clothes. But is it just a matter of habit and fashion or is there any scientific reason behind it. Research and medical science show that feeling cold is not only a matter of the person’s will, but is also related to the body’s structure, hormones and metabolism. Therefore, it is important to understand why the experience of feeling cold may be different in girls and boys.
Scientifically speaking, the basal metabolic rate of women is slightly lower than that of men. This means that women’s bodies produce less energy at rest, which also reduces the level of heat in the body. Apart from this, the fat percentage in the body of women is higher, which helps in keeping the internal organs of the body warm, but the heat does not reach the hands and feet quickly. This is the reason why many women say that their hands and feet feel cold, while the rest of the body remains normal.
Hormones also play a big role in this. Women have more estrogen hormone, which constricts the blood vessels. Due to this, blood flow to the external parts of the body like fingers, legs and ears reduces, and cold is felt more. Whereas in men, testosterone hormone helps in maintaining heat in the body. During menstruation, the body temperature of women keeps increasing and decreasing slightly, due to which the feeling of cold can also change.
Another reason is related to clothes and lifestyle. Often, due to fashion, women wear light or tight clothes, which do not provide adequate protection from cold. Apart from this, the temperature of AC inside office or home may also feel colder for women, because this setting is usually decided according to the body of men. The problem of low iron or anemia is also more common in women, due to which the supply of oxygen in the body reduces and one feels more cold.
