Floriculture Training: Dr. Anuradha Ranjan Kumari, senior scientist and president of the centre, said that at present the demand for flowers is increasing rapidly not only in India but also at the international level.
Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sheohar is continuously organizing training programs to make farmers aware about scientific and advanced cultivation of flowers. This program is proving to be especially beneficial for the farmers, garden lovers and rural youth of the district. The main objective of the training is to connect them with modern technologies and provide opportunities to increase income in the field of flower production. Dr. Anuradha Ranjan Kumari, senior scientist and chairperson of the centre, said that at present the demand for flowers is increasing rapidly not only in India but also at the international level. In such a situation, farmers who do farming using scientific methods can earn more profits.
During the training, Dr. Anuradha gave detailed information on climate selection, fertilizer management, irrigation methods and disease-pest control. The demand for marigold flower remains throughout the year and its improved varieties like African and French are very beneficial from commercial point of view. Farmers were also given information about planting techniques, plant production, plant spacing, nutrition management and scientific timing of flower plucking. Marigold is a flower which is used for decorative as well as industrial and nutritional purposes.
Marigold flowers are in demand throughout the year
In the program, scientist Dr. Ghosh especially discussed the importance of lutein pigmentation. He told that lutein obtained from marigold flower is used as food for chickens in the poultry industry. This increases the natural yellow color of eggs. Due to which the market price of eggs is higher. In this way, marigold flower is emerging as a strong medium of providing profit to the farmers not only in the flower market but also in the industrial areas. Farmers were also told that in view of the increasing demand for lutein, marigold cultivation can prove to be more profitable in the coming years.
Use drip irrigation
During the training, modern mechanical methods and equipment used in flower farming were also demonstrated. Scientists said that the use of drip irrigation, sprinkler system, plastic mulching, power weeder and other modern equipment not only saves labor but also increases production efficiency. Many processes from field preparation to planting, weeding, irrigation and harvesting have now been mechanized, allowing more production to be achieved in less time. The Center assured the farmers that if they adopt these modern technologies, flower farming can prove to be a sustainable and profitable business for them.
