Tau Crop: After paddy, tau is considered the second major crop of farmers in Surguja district of Chhattisgarh. This crop sown in winter used to give 10 times profit to the farmers earlier, but this year the situation has completely changed. Rain, frost and insect infestation have badly damaged the Tau crop. Due to excessive rain and cold, the growth of plants stopped, due to which neither the plants could reach normal height nor did they develop grains. As a result, this time it has become difficult for the farmers to even recover the cost. The situation is so bad that a huge decline in production has been recorded compared to last year. Moreover, due to cost of labor, the cost of farming has increased further. Whereas earlier farmers used to earn 10 to 12 times profit from one crop of Tau, this time there is a possibility of huge loss. Farmers are very worried, see this report…
Tau crop growth badly affected
Farmer Rameshwar Yadav told Local 18 that this year’s tau crop did not grow as expected. He said that earlier Tau used to grow to a height equal to the head, but this time the plants have remained very small. There is no grain at all. Flowers came, but they fell due to rain and strong wind. Earlier, good money was earned from tau, but this time the crop has caused huge loss. Rameshwar told that he planted tau in 6-7 acres, spent about Rs 20,000, but now it is difficult to even calculate the cost.
Double attack of pests and weather
Farmer Parmeshwar Yadav also told Local 18 that he had planted tau in 5 acres but the crop was destroyed due to weather and pest attack. He said that earlier one bag of seeds would yield 10-20 bags. This time 20 bags were sown, but even if 40 bags are sown, it will be difficult to cover the labor and expenses. The flowers fell due to rain, excess water and wind. Insects got stuck from above, hence grains could not be formed. Now even the frost is falling, hence the hope of profit is lost.
Wages are expensive, production is low, double blow on farmers
Farmers told Local 18 that this time there was no fruiting in the tau, the flowers withered and grains did not form. On top of that, labor is also expensive. Farmers say that they have to pay Rs 200 a day to laborers for harvesting, while they are not getting even half of the produce. In such a situation, huge losses are certain in this season. Earlier, the height of the plants grown on Tau cultivation was high, but this time the height has also stopped, only the plant is visible, the rest of the crop is as it is and there are no grains. From this it can be estimated that this time it has become difficult for the farmers to recover the cost from the Tau crop.
