Muzaffarpur: These days the campaign to remove encroachment is going on in Bihar. In many districts from Patna, Gaya, Darbhanga to Bhagalpur, the administration is continuously running bulldozers on illegal encroachments. Action is also going on against the encroachers living on roads, government land, ponds and rivers. In this context, preparations for major action have also started in Muzaffarpur district, where hundreds of families living on the land of Budhi Gandak river are facing the threat of bulldozers.
For many years, illegal settlements have been settled on the banks and belt of Budhi Gandak river flowing in the center of Muzaffarpur city. Especially in Sikandarpur area, the area called “Karpoori Nagar”, situated in the river belt, is completely encroached upon, where hundreds of families live. Local people say that they are landless and are forced to live in huts on the river land. Every year when the water rises they have to face flood like situation, but they have no other option to live. During the construction of the bridge and other projects, many families were removed, but they were shifted to the same area on the other side of the river, due to which the problem remained the same.
The house is on private land, many people claim
There are many permanent houses on the banks of the river, whose owners claim that they are built on private land and the registry is also legal. However, the administration is now closely investigating which land is part of the natural course of the river and which has actually been encroached upon. The biggest question is why these localities situated in the river belt were not evacuated for years? Encroachment on river courses disrupts water flow, increases the risk of floods and also affects the city’s drainage system. Experts believe that the city cannot get relief from floods without completely freeing the river land from encroachment.
SDM said – there will be no laxity
Meanwhile, SDM East Tushar Kumar has clearly said that now no laxity will be maintained. He said that all the people who have encroached on the river land will be removed. If any family is landless, they will be given a residence certificate and arrangements will be made to settle at another safe place. The administration is soon going to survey the identified areas and start taking action in a phased manner. As soon as the bulldozer operation starts in Muzaffarpur, not only Karpoori Nagar but also other encroached areas nearby may be affected.
