India-America Trade Deal: There has been an interesting twist in the ongoing trade deal between India and America. The representative leading the American team on the trade deal has said that for the first time a great offer has been received from India.
New Delhi. Since the beginning of this year, talks on trade deal between India and America have started, there have been many ups and downs. The deal which once looked almost final suddenly got stuck regarding dairy and agri products. Now Jameson Greer, the US representative leading the trade deal, has said that for the first time a great offer has been received from India. Speculations have started on his statement whether an agreement has not been reached between the two countries regarding agri and dairy products.
Amidst the ongoing exercise on farm products between the two countries, US Trade Representative Greer said that as a country, Washington has received a great offer from India for the first time. He said that America’s trade team is still in Delhi and talks are going on there on sensitive topics like agriculture. He said that America’s Deputy Trade Representative is currently talking to India. Joint Secretary Darpan Singh is leading the talks from the Indian side.
What has India offered?
The American official said that there was a ban on some crops and agri products in India, but now with the offers made by New Delhi, the possibility of opening new avenues has increased. However, he did not directly tell what offer India has made, but praised India for opening new possibilities for negotiating trade deals. He indicated that a consensus can be reached on entry of American agri products into the Indian market through other means.
These crops can get entry
Greer told the US Parliament that India has agreed to allow our sorghum and soybean entry into its market. This will make it easier to deal with the obstacles facing the agricultural sector in the way of a trade deal. Although India raised objections regarding some crops, for the first time the talks between the two countries are progressing in such a positive manner. He also claimed that India is a good alternative for American products and it is our priority to move forward on trade with it.
Talk can also be done on ethanol
Greer expressed hope that America is currently searching for markets for its agri products around the world, including Europe and Asia. We want to reduce our dependence on China and we will take forward talks with whichever country gives entry to our agricultural products. Greer expressed hope that India can also buy American ethanol made from soybean and corn. He said that many countries have agreed to buy American ethanol. Talks are going on with the European Union on energy purchase worth 750 billion dollars (about Rs 67 lakh crore).
