Satna. As the winter season starts increasing, the digestion process of the body also starts slowing down. At such times, consuming heavy food late at night not only increases fatigue and lethargy the next day but also gives rise to problems like gas, bloating and cough. Experts say that in this season the timing of meals directly affects our health, hence it becomes very important to choose food according to the right timing and nature. This is the reason that the more balanced the food routine is in winter, the better the health.
In winter, more energy is required to maintain body temperature, due to which the digestive system slows down a bit. This is the reason why late night food remains in the stomach for a longer time and the body is not able to digest it completely. Both Ayurveda and modern nutrition believe that during cold weather, dinner should be taken maximum between 7–8 pm so that the food gets enough time to digest. Food eaten late can reach the large intestine and cause rot, which later causes problems like gas, constipation and heaviness.
Why is it important to eat food according to taste?
The quality of food is considered very important in winter. Experts say that hot food items like ginger, jaggery, hot soup, porridge and green vegetables keep the body warm from inside and keep the digestion process active. At the same time, taking cold food items late at night can slow down digestion and increase phlegm in the body. Balanced, light and warming food is considered the ideal diet for this season.
Speaking to Local 18, dietitian Mamta Pandey, resident of Satna, Madhya Pradesh, tells that due to early sunset in winter, the biological clock of the body also goes into slow-down mode. Our circadian rhythm works according to sunlight, so eating food early in the cold gives better time to digestion and the body also gets the real nutrition from food. She advises to keep dinner light and reduce fried and heavy food. If you feel hungry again late at night after meals, then taking lukewarm milk with turmeric is a great option. It quenches hunger and also nourishes the body.
Side effects of eating late
Eating late at night not only spoils digestion but also affects insulin sensitivity, which can increase blood sugar levels. Apart from this, the body is not able to utilize the calories of the food which is not completely digested and it starts converting into fat, due to which the risk of weight gain increases. Eating late also disturbs the sleep cycle and people who eat late often wake up late, due to which the daily routine gets affected.
Eating on time is the key to good health
Experts believe that in winter, food taken on time and as per the taste plays the most important role in giving energy to the body, increasing immunity and keeping diseases away. A light, warm and timely dinner not only improves digestion but also guarantees complete sleep and better health.
