Potato cultivation has an important place in the Ravi season, but as the cold increases, this crop starts facing the weather rapidly. Especially when it is continuously cloudy, the temperature drops and there is light drizzle. If such conditions persist for 4 to 7 days, the possibility of frost damage to potato plants increases significantly. These fluctuations in weather directly affect the growth of leaves and plants, hence farmer brothers need to be especially alert at this time.
The first sign of frost is the change in color of potato leaves. Normal green leaves suddenly start appearing yellow, then gradually wither and start drooping. Sometimes the entire leaf turns black overnight. This is a sign that the attack of frost has started and the upper part of the plant is getting affected. If timely measures are not taken, this problem can reach the roots and tubers, which has a huge impact on the yield.
Why does the risk increase when there is continuous cloud cover?
When there are continuous clouds, wind stops and the temperature comes around 5 degrees, moisture in the fields starts accumulating on the surface. On this frozen moisture, frost is formed due to drop in temperature at night, which damages the plant cells. Due to clouds, sunlight is not available during the day and plants are not able to regenerate their energy. In such a situation, if the farmer brothers do not remain active, then huge loss to the crop is certain.
Do light irrigation in time
The easiest and most effective way to protect against frost is light irrigation. By giving light water to the field, the temperature increases slightly and moisture is prevented from freezing at the leaf level. This reduces the intensity of frost and the plants remain safe. But keep in mind that irrigation should not be excessive, giving only light moisture to the crop is sufficient. This method should be adopted immediately as soon as the first signs of frost appear.
Can provide additional protection by creating smoke
Burning wood, straw or dry leaves around the potato fields at night and creating smoke is also very effective. The smoke forms a layer over the field, due to which the temperature does not drop suddenly and frost does not form. This traditional but effective technique is still adopted by farmers in large areas. Especially on cold, windless nights, this method can save the crop to a great extent.
When and how to use the medicine
If frost outbreak appears or is suspected, then use of Indofil M-45 in the field is considered beneficial. Mix its quantity in 2 grams per liter of water and spray it evenly in the entire field. This medicine prevents the frost affected cells from rotting and strengthens the protective layer of the plants. If the infestation has become severe, re-spraying is necessary after 7 to 10 days.
Only timely measures can save the crop
Potato crop is a short-term and sensitive crop, hence in case of frost, every day is important. If farmers monitor the condition of leaves in time and use irrigation, fumigation and medicine at the right time, then big losses can be easily avoided. Vigilance and proper management are the biggest basis for good yield in this season.
