The statement was issued by US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner after two-day talks with Ukrainian representatives. It says that peace is possible only if Russia reduces violence and stops attacks. Ukraine agreed to several US-mediated ceasefire proposals throughout 2025, but Russia did not even once indicate to stop its aggression. Immediately after this statement, Russia targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, substations, power generation units and even the supply lines of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Plant. There is also news that the huge protective shield built on the Chernobyl nuclear plant is not able to stop the radiation.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia fired 653 Shahed drones, 36 cruise missiles and 17 ballistic missiles. More than 60 attacks were recorded at a total of 29 locations. Just before noon on December 6, air raid sirens began sounding across Ukraine as Russia sent another wave of ballistic missiles. In the statement, the American and Ukrainian sides said that it is necessary to end the war and bring about a credible ceasefire, only then Ukraine will be able to move forward on the reconstruction plan. Both sides will resume talks on 6 December.
Russia fired drones and missiles
But the situation is moving in the opposite direction. On the same night, Russia launched a major attack on the city of Kremenchuk in central Ukraine. Several explosions were heard around 1:30 local time. According to reports, the Russian military fired several Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and sent dozens of drones towards the city. The supply of electricity, water and heating has been disrupted in many areas of the city. Kremenchuk had a population of about 2.15 lakh before the war and is located about 250 kilometers south-east of Kiev. At present the details of casualties are not clear.
Which cities of Ukraine were attacked?
Meanwhile, sounds of explosions were also heard in Fastiv city of Kiev Oblast. A day earlier, a missile had fallen on the main railway station here, which President Zelensky called a ‘military pointless attack’. According to Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klimenko, at least eight people were injured in the December 5 attacks in the Kyiv, Lviv and Dnipropetrovsk regions. Russia has been continuously carrying out large-scale attacks on Ukrainian cities for the past few months, while America is trying to stop the war by becoming a mediator.
Danger looms over Chernobyl
Meanwhile, there is news that New Safe Confinement (NSC), the huge protective shield built on Ukraine’s Chernobyl nuclear plant, is no longer able to play its original role. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) issued a warning on Friday, saying that a drone attack in February had caused so much damage to the structure that it had lost the ability to protect radioactive debris. Ukraine held Russia responsible for the attack, while Moscow denied the allegation.

According to the IAEA, the drone strike severely damaged the external cladding of the NSC and also caused a fire. This is the same steel structure that was erected in 2019 over the old, dilapidated ‘sarcophagus’, so that the remains of the 1986 nuclear disaster could be safely removed. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said that although there was no permanent damage to the load-carrying structures, the protective layer above had lost its effectiveness.
