Shashi Tharoor News: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor presented a private member’s bill in Parliament demanding declaring marital rape as a crime. He says that marriage cannot take away a woman’s consent. In another bill, he expressed the need for strict rules on increasing work burnout. In the third proposal, it was said that a permanent commission should be formed for the reorganization of the states.
New Delhi. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor again came into limelight on Friday amid the winter session of Parliament. The reason is a private member’s bill introduced by him whose objective is to bring marital rape into the category of crime. Tharoor strongly raised the demand for removing the legal exemption that has been prevalent in India for a long time. Tharoor wants that forced relationship with wife should be considered a crime. Tharoor says that the law will now have to come out of old thinking. Marriage does not take away a woman’s consent.
Shashi Tharoor also wrote the same thing on social media platform X. He clearly said that India will now have to go beyond ‘no means no’ and follow the principle of ‘only yes means yes’. Her argument is that every woman should have full rights, protection and respect over her body even within marriage. This is a constitutional right, not a gift of any social agreement.
Bill should also be brought to fix working hours
Not only this, Tharoor presented another private member’s bill on Friday. This time to stop the increasing work burnout in the country. In recent months, several corporate incidents have sparked a new debate on work pressure. Notably, the sudden death of a 26-year-old employee of multinational company EY in Pune, which was reportedly linked to heavy workload. Pointing to this incident, Tharoor said that a large population of India “works more than 49 hours a week and 78% of the employees are facing burnout.” According to him, now the time has come that laws on working hours, mental health and workplace safety should be made more strict.
Bill also on reorganization of states and union territories
Apart from this, Tharoor also introduced a third private member’s bill, in which it is proposed to create a permanent commission for the future reorganization of states and union territories in the country. Its objective will be to take decisions on the basis of concrete parameters like population, administrative capacity, economic strength and public will, and not on the basis of political equations.
What is Private Member Bill?
There are two types of bills introduced by MPs. If a bill is introduced by a minister, it is called a government bill. And if an ordinary MP introduces a bill, it is considered a private member’s bill. Such bills definitely create discussion, but the chances of passing are always less.
