Ghaziabad: In today’s era, children are not only using mobile phones for playing games or watching videos but are also talking to Artificial Intelligence. As modern as this trend appears, it can prove to be dangerous for the mental health of children. Many parents do not even know which AI apps their child is talking to and what kind of information he is getting. According to experts, this habit is increasing the distance between children and parents. It is also bringing serious changes in the behavior of children.
According to Dr. Shivani, today most of the parents are both working. Due to this, children have to stay alone at home. Loneliness draws them towards mobile phones and gradually children become so attached to phones and AI that communication with family starts reducing. The doctor says that talking to AI is a one-way conversation. No matter how wrong the child says, the AI will neither interrupt nor correct it. Whereas parents show the right direction to the child. Therefore, the inclination towards AI is reducing the emotional bonds of children.
Due to these habits, many types of changes are being seen in children. Symptoms like social withdrawal, irritability, decline in studies, not talking to parents and in many cases virtual autism have also been reported. Such cases are increasing rapidly in children between 3 to 16 years. She says that children should be allowed limited use of mobile phones. A child of 5 to 6 years of age should be given mobile phone for only 30 minutes, while children of 14–15 years of age should not be given mobile phone for more than an hour. It is important to divide this time equally between studies and entertainment. Parents should also keep in mind which game the child is playing and whether he is connecting to any wrong app.
She recommends setting a parental access code so that parents can monitor phone activities. Dr. Shivani says that today children have started spending more than 8 hours on the phone out of 24 hours, due to which they are moving away from outdoor games and getting cut off from society. If the child stops talking, starts becoming weak in studies or shows extreme irritability, then it is important to get counseling from a mental health professional immediately. By intervening in time, the future of the child can be protected.
